North Cornwall Events
Yesterday, in glorious sunshine, a group of us were treated to a guided walk across the iconic Rough Tor - a majestic granite capped part of Bodmin Moor just south east of Camelford.
Far from being a desolate bit of moorland, Rough Tor has a rich historical past and the whole area is littered with evidence of cultural and domestic use stretching back thousands of years. Interpreting these features for us was Peter Herring, professional archaeologist for English Heritage in Cornwall.
We learnt about round houses, immense bank cairns that align with features in the landscape and how the landscape was revered by peoples of the past. More recent history was revealed in the form of abandoned granite millstones, hewn by stone masons of the past and by viewing the footings of the Chapel of St Michael, right on the top of Rough Tor itself, where our tour ended.
Don't miss out on our other walks and events this summer! Booking is essential for some, so check the website or events leaflets.
